Talk the talk

Gem Faulks

CPR business development manager Gem Faulks offers her best advice for keeping your consultations fun, friendly and on track.

What is consultation in our industry?

It’s asking questions, learning about every person so that you can give them what they want, but also what they can handle that will make them feel great.

Key Questions… How often do you wash your hair? How long do you have to get ready each morning? Where are you most of the day, inside/outside? Do you play sport or exercise regularly? What’s your biggest gripe about your hair? How often do you want to visit the salon? What do you like about your hair? What have you done to your hair in the last few years? (Length dependent)

Why ask all of this? So that you can understand what will or won’t work with their hair, it’s important that you both are on the same page. To get to this you need to learn more about them than the Instagram pic they’ve shown you.

How is this empowering? It means the stylist is confident in the expectations and the results they can achieve, it means the client feels good knowing that they’ve been heard and will leave feeling confident.

Thorough consultation is the key to a successful salon. How? You will stand out from the rest by going that step further. You will retain a steady, regular clientele. One thing I was constantly complimented on was my consultation, my questions and my advice.

Most colour corrections could be so simply avoided by consulting thoroughly. Be confident, you’re a professional, you work hard, you know what you know, keep industry education up to date, you care about the results you create, you want a good reputation, you use products you love, and you have the support with CPR to stand out.

Be the best you can be, why not?

What do you love about the industry?

With 23 years in the hairdressing industry and self-employed since the age of 21, my energy thrives on the transformative power of my work. Beyond hairstyling, I see my role as a sacred position to care for people on a profound level. Thorough consultation, attentive listening, and a commitment to respect and validate, create an enriching experience for both the stylist and client.

What did you specialize in? Beyond technical skills, what truly drives me is the ability to share my experiences and industry knowledge with clients. CPR, for me, is not just a job—it's a new way of life. I thrive on the dynamic nature of my work; if I'm not juggling multiple tasks simultaneously, I find myself yearning for more.

What do you love about working for CPR? What brings me the utmost joy is witnessing the confidence that blooms in my customers when we collaboratively tackle a colour correction using CPR. The shared journey results in a transformation that leaves them not just satisfied, but genuinely blown away by the outcome that they can now proudly call their own. My pride extends beyond personal achievements to the talented stylists I've had the privilege to partner with. In each success, I see a testament to the collective passion and skill that defines our craft.
