Master colour melting
CPR Ambassador Co-owner of B’me Hair
About B’me.
HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! My name is Holly and I’m so excited to be on board with CPR Hair as their new brand and education ambassador!
Back in 2016 I was the North Brisbane rep for this amazing Australian brand CPR, and I had a feeling when I left to follow my hair dreams that it wouldn’t be the end of our journey together. Fast forward to now and we have so much inspirational content planned for everyone this year!
Now, anyone who knows me knows I’m a hair geek and an avid colourist, making CPR a huge part of both my business and my creativity. Not only do we have the best colour chart to work with; ranging from gorgeous chocolates to flaming coppers and reds! It’s also a natural based product, meaning I can make the colour magic happen whilst the product is keeping the hair healthy as its processing.
I love every part of taking care of my clients, however there’s just something about colouring that gets me all excited! Colour is my JAM!
I am generally a creative colourist, but to be a fantastic creative and vivid colourist you HAVE to know all things bleaching! Honestly, I’d say 70% of my clientele are actually blondies, and CPR Fast Lift is by far the best powder lightener I have used – which makes this process a dream! The more even you can lift the hair and the healthier you keep it, the better your end results and colour longevity will be.
When finding your hairdressing forte, I think it’s important to master every aspect of that field. For me, colouring is my forte! I made it my mission to not pigeonhole myself in one area of colouring, but make sure I could confidently welcome any client. With this being my approach, I ensure it’s something I teach my apprentices too. It’s the best feeling watching them grow and find their strengths and passions.
Master colour melting
One of my absolute favourite techniques is colour melting.
Seeing two colours melt together seamlessly is so satisfying and looks lovely. I’m going to share my colour blending tips and tricks with you so you can create your own amazing melting moments for your clients… This is something I’ll also be focusing on in the new 'Colour for the Creatives' workshop coming this year!
Firstly, you’ll be needing:
- A clean towel
- Clean tint brushes (messy brushes leave you with less control). Tip: mix your colour with a whisk so your brush is clean and tight for application.
- Plenty of sectioning clips
- Your two colours to melt. A personal favourite is working with reds and coppers so imagine 6.66 + 7.444 (these combos are in my Holly kits!)
- And finally, a lovely head of hair to work with!
Step 1 – It’s so important to keep a clean workspace - so I always like to have the hair sectioned neatly, this way there’s no mess or transferring.
Step 2 - I usually work from the two back sections first, this way it’s easier to rinse first if necessary (1000% always work from the back when bleaching).
Step 3 – Apply to the root area first, and then come back through and blend the root colour down. I ALWAYS use my thumb and index fingertip to blend the exact areas I need.
Step 4 – Apply your second colour to the mids and ends then feather up to the root colour. Once complete, you re-blend with your thumb and index finger. I wipe my hands between each blend... I like to call this my ‘swipe and wipe’ method.
Step 5 – Repeat this through the rest of the hair and leave to process then rinse, treat and style!
The reason I like to use my fingertips to blend is so I have control over what I am working with. I find if you ‘milk’ the colour through, you can end up with a hybrid middle colour as you have less control over what you’re blending.
I hope this helps a little in your melting and blending endeavours! The results will be fab, and I would love to see what you create!
You may have heard about my Holly Kits, these are two colour kits I have put together using CPR Colour and Ammonia-free T-Toners. These colours are my personal favourites, ones my salon and I absolutely swear by and I can’t wait to share them with you!
