Hey Honey #01
CPR Ambassador Owner of Hey Honey Hair
Hey Honey, my name is Jacqui. I am the owner of Hey Honey Hair on the Gold Coast. Earlier this year I was approached by the CPR team and was asked if I’d be interested in writing a column for The Circle magazine. At first I thought, I am so not a writer but then I envisioned myself as the Carrie Bradshaw of the hair world and it gave me the confidence to start my first ever column!
So, here goes. Maybe not as juicy as Carrie’s but I sure hope to keep you hooked and wanting more. I promise to stay real and keep it fun while providing you with some useful tips along the way.
I thought we could start with root smudging, tips on the perfect blends and how to pick the correct colour for your client. I do all my root smudging, toning and tip-out work at the basin. An easy way to pick the right colour is to determine the natural level of your client’s hair and taking it as deep as that, or even half to a full shade darker and blending down with a shade or two lighter to avoid it looking dense. Never go lighter than their natural base for the root colour. With the ends, think light and bright!
Tip: keep out a section around the front hairline and use your end colour instead of your smudge. It will give you the perfect face frame and add a POP to the overall look.
My go-to colour combos atm:
Root Smudging: 1:1 mixing ratio T5.0 / 5vol-1.5% + colour advantage & for an ashier finish, I add a dot of T6.12. (A dot being 2 grams, you knew that though because it’s hairdressing lingo).
Ends/glossing: half T10.2 / half T10.32 / 5vol-1.5% + colour advantage. 1:1 mixing ratio.
NOW, the application… You need to make sure you are working with well prepped hair. A detox cleanse prior to application will make sure there’s no build up of product or lightener that can ruin your results.
Brush the hair before application with a detangling brush and determine how much smudge you want. You don’t want your ends to become dull so make sure you don’t take the smudge too low or drag the colour out, keep those ends bright.
After preparing the hair with colour prep, apply your root colour and brush through straight away! BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH! This will leave you with a perfect blend. Next, apply your end colour. Where the two colours meet you want to use your fingers to smudge them together to create a seamless blend. Being extra speedy with your application is key.
Watching your colour at the basin is so important. Don’t leave your client. Don’t leave it in the hands of someone else. Perfect results take time and patience. Use your professionalism to make the call when to rinse, remember it is always going to appear darker when the hair is wet.
After rinsing, finish off with colour secure to lock in your colour. Apply vitalink before your blow out and make sure your client takes home the right products to keep their colour looking fabulous. Great hair isn’t just about what happens in the salon.
I hope these simple tips have helped! If you have any questions or topics you’d really love me to write about next, follow me on Instagram @heyhoneyhair__ and send me a DM. I’d love to meet you and give you any tips, ideas and advice that I can.
Love,
Jacqui

The products do what they say they are going to and the colours are always true to swatch” says Jacqui.
We love the fresh new concepts Jacqui brings to CPR’s creative team and look forward to working with her closely as our next CPR Ambassador.
