Mastering Emotional Intelligence in the Salon
As an industry, hairdressers have not always recognised a skill we develop over time while working with our clients: Emotional Intelligence. But what does it mean?
Emotional Intelligence (also known as Emotional Quotient or EQ) is the ability to manage our own emotions in a positive way to communicate effectively, relieve stress, empathise with others (both team members and clients), overcome challenges, and alleviate conflict.
The 4 Key Skills of Emotional Intelligence:
- Self-management: The ability to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Self-awareness: Recognizing your own emotions and understanding how they affect your thoughts and behavior. It involves knowing your strengths and weaknesses and having self-confidence.
- Social awareness: The capacity for empathy. Understanding the emotions, needs, and concerns of others, picking up on emotional cues, feeling comfortable socially, and recognizing power dynamics in a group or organization.
- Relationship management: Knowing how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict effectively.
